Movie rentals for iTunes?

December 30, 2007

According to CNN.com, Apple will announce next month its plans for a movie rental service on iTunes, the online music/TV/movie/podcast store. This is an improvement for iTunes, because personally I rarely buy movies because of the price, and the fact that I only watch them once before copying them to my computer and deleting them from my iPod. One senior official for a research company said: “People want to watch movies but not necessarily own them. If Apple can simplify the digital movie services like they did with music, then we’re talking about a very significant change in the online video rental landscape.” I know that I will make more use of my iPod’s movie features if movies are available for rent.

According to the article, this move has come at a time when movie sales on iTunes are lagging far behind music sales It appears to me the two main reasons are the fact there simply aren’t that many movies available on iTunes(especially when compared to online movie distributors like Netflix) , and that iTunes movies are relatively expensive(9.99$-14.99$) compared to songs(.99$) and TV episodes(1.99$). Hopefully, Apple will go through with these rentals and improve iTunes that way.

This is Kolametal, signing off.
