SNES Games on the Cheap: Getting the Best for Your Buck

July 31, 2008

Retro gaming is definitely “in” right now. Lately, there has been a general trend of consumers going away from eye-popping graphics and towards games which are simply magical and fun. This is greatly evidenced by Nintendo’s Wii console, which is outselling both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Included in the Wii’s offerings is the ability to download Nintendo’s older games, including those from the Super Nintendo, or SNES. Unlike some modern games, that require an extraordinary learning curve, these SNES games are fun to pick up and play, making them a great social activity. Most children and adults love Mario games, especially Super Mario Brothers and Mario Kart.

However, there is a much more cost-effective solution to playing these games than going out and buying a Wii. You can still easily purchase the SNES from many sources, including Craigslist, Ebay, and local garage sales. For casual gaming, nothing beats finding a used Super Nintendo packaged with games at a local garage sale. These are often to be had for under $20, and benefit you by including controllers, accessories and games. Plus, the SNES draws very little electricity in comparison to a modern game console, meaning you can leave it plugged in without worrying about the electricity bill later. Once you’ve got the console acquired, you’ll find that jumping into the “golden age of gaming” is still very easy and cheap. Donkey Kong Country is a must-buy, along with its’ popular sequels which featured Diddy Kong. The Legend of Zelda, Harvest Moon, Super Street Fighter II, Legends of Mana, and the Final Fantasy RPG’s are all great classics which are familiar to most gamers. Any Super Mario title is also, of course, a must-buy.

Getting Super Nintendo Games for Cheap!

Overall, it is easy to get a complete gaming package for about the price of a single Wii or Xbox game. An SNES bundle has a ton of quality, and is a great addition to the home of both casual and regular gamers. Casual video game fans will appreciate the minimal time commitment each game requires, as well as the fun it provides when playing with friends. Nostalgia cannot really be reproduced through playing emulated games on the Wii, it’s got to be done on the original console, complete with the minimal controllers and pixellated graphics. Plus, special games like “Shaq Fu” starring Kung-Fu master Shaq will never be offered for download on the Wii - you’ve got to buy the original cartridge. Movie Review: The Strangers

June 7, 2008

http://www.toxicshock.tv/news/wp-content/uploads/the_strangers_poster3.jpg

So, I saw The Strangers last weekend…it was actually scarier then I thought it would be. Its about a troupe of three traveling serial killers who terrorize a couple who is alone in a cabin in the isolated woods of Northern California. While it was a tad repetitive, the only complaint I have is the idiot who sat in front of me during the film. But, one asshole didn’t ruin the movie. It posted more then its share of decent scares, and even a few scenes I didn’t see coming.

The movie slowly grows more and more intense, with one of the killers showing up on the doorstep asking for “Tamara”. Then, a masked man shows up at the window, staring straight inside…then the phones go dead, and all hell breaks loose. There are three masked killers, each creepy in their own way. And they’re all armed with blunt objects. The killers enjoy a sick fascination in tormenting their victims, keeping them alive when they have chances to kill them only so that they can torture them further. THis movie was one of the scarier ones I’ve seen in a while, which was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t really connect with any of the actors, but they still did a decent job. The musical score was creepy, which I guess would be the  point. Not much else to say-if you’re looking for a quick and fun scare, see this movie.
