Forums to be up soon!

November 19, 2007

If you’d been paying attention, last week. You would have noticed that the forums were open to all, for the very first time. Unfortunately we had problems with the script itself, resulting in me having to shut them down, until further notice.
Well i’m expecting to have them up tomorrow.  But don’t hold me to that :P as the people who know me, will know that i’m the worlds worst for making deadlines and keeping promises.

Stay tuned folks!

Movie Review Double Feature: American Gangster and Beowulf

November 18, 2007

With all the time I have off for Thanksgiving, I thought it might be a good idea to catch a couple movies-this past Saturday, I went to see American Gangster starring Russell Crowe and Denzel Washington, and today I saw Beowulf, the 21st century interpetation of the ancient epic. The two movies are very different in scope; one follows the story of a Harlem drug lord in the 1970’s and the police officer who must bring him down, and the other is about a hero who comes to slay a demon, but must then contend with a new, bigger problem.

First up, American Gangster-this was a great film in every respect, and will definetely be a contender for Best Picture when the Oscars are held in February 2008. The acting was first class, the story arc was well written, and the crew of the movie obviously spared no expense in making everything seem very, very real. American Gangster focuses on drug lord Frank Lucas(Denzel Washington), who is importing pure heroin from Thailand and marketing it on the streets as “Blue Magic”, and Richie Roberts(Russell Crowe), the detective who heads the New Jersey-New York division of a special police unit designed to bring America’s drug problem under control. The movie is long(about 2 hrs and 40 mins), but it is definetely worth it. I very much enjoyed this movie, and would highly recommend it.

Beowulf, on the other hand…well, it’s not really fair to compare the two, though Beowulf could have been much better. The entire movie seemed to me like it was trying to take an ancient epic and make it into a 300-style film. The action sequences did have quite a bit of potential…but they never fully realized it. The plot seemed to jump around quite a bit, and the characters seemed distant at best. Beowulf is good if you have some spare time to kill, but it certainly isn’t on par with American Gangster.

 Kolametal, signing off.
